Bible Code

Since ancient times, people have been trying to predict what will happen next. It is only a natural behavior. After all, the world must have seemed pretty strange to our ancestors – it still seems pretty strange to us. The seasons would change without reason, the sun would rise and set, and the moon would go through phases. Sometimes mysterious diseases and deaths would hit, other times children would be born. The search to understand what lies behind natural events and phenomena is one of the deepest and most fundamental human drives.

The Bible code is one of the most interesting manifestations of this search. There have been many different Bible codes, but the original one has to do with the first five books – the Torah. According to Orthodox Jewish tradition, there is a code hidden in the Bible that predicts many different events. It tells when the Messiah will come, when the world will end, and other lofty and important prophecies.

Whether there are codes in the Bible has been the subject of a great deal of debate. Proponents of the Bible code argue that through applying principles of numerology, you can find out all sorts of things. Now that they have the Bible digitized, They can use all sorts of sophisticated tricks to search through it. They can look for every third letter, for example, or the word immediately following every mention of the name of God. Through this kind of pattern seeking, they claim to be able to make fantastic predictions.

Looking into the Bible code myself has so far been inconclusive. I have to admit that there are some strange coincidences I have seen. Some Bible codes seem to predict events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, World War II, and other great happenings in the 20th century. Mathematicians claim that this is all just a coincidence or a phenomena of selective attention, but I can’t be sure. After all, scientists tend to be as biased as the rest of us if you ask me.

My take on the Bible code is that everyone has to make up his or her mind and not rely on any so-called experts. The most important thing in religion, after all, is the spiritual guidance it can give every individual. If it helps you to believe in the Bible code, by all means do. If you don’t find the belief useful, however, ignore it. After all, who can tell you for certain whether it exists or not?
