What Causes Obesity
Up until recently, people really did not seem to have a good idea about what causes obesity. Basically, they felt like the sole causes of obesity were overeating and lack of exercise. In one sense this is true. If you are obese and switch to a healthy diet and exercise enough, you will probably lose weight. In another sense, however, the factors that cause obesity are much more complex. Obesity is a combination of lifestyle, genetic factors, environmental conditions, and psychology. Individually, none of these factors cause obesity. When all combined, however, the whole picture starts to emerge.
Although the research into what causes obesity has not been completely fruitful, it has produced some interesting new techniques for fighting the condition. We know a lot more about human digestive processes, the processing of calories, and the distribution of weight than we used to it. This allows us to custom tailor diets to fight obesity and allow people to lose the weight they need to. As a result, folks are getting healthier and managing to keep the weight off more effectively.
The interesting thing about a complex question like what causes obesity is that you can look at it from different perspectives depending on what sort of solution you are looking for. For example, you can look at it from a lifestyle choice perspective in order to get people recommendations about how to lose weight. We know now that eating quickly makes it difficult for the stomach to send signals to the brain when it is full. As a result, sitting down and scarfing your food frequently causes obesity, and people who eat more slowly tend to be more healthy.
When we look at a psychological approach, we also get interesting information. Psychologically, emotional eating causes obesity more frequently than any other single factor. If we can teach people to eat because of hunger and not because of stress, anxiety, or other emotional problems, we can help them to defeat the cause of obesity. This is great for counselors, psychiatrists, and other mental health professionals.
Perhaps the most interesting research of all, however, is the research that looks into the physical causes of obesity. We know more about what the body does and how it processes food than ever before, so we can do a lot to affect the process that causes obesity. There are health supplements that can short circuit the body’s ability to deposit fat, resulting in a leaner, healthier physique. Even in the absence of the necessary lifestyle and psychological changes, we can make fat people thinner. Although this may not be as good a solution as a self conscious lifestyle change, it is much better than staying unhealthy and overweight.
